As we just completed a new cedar shake roof in Glen Echo, Md, I am reminded of the importance of maintenance on this type of material. A properly installed shake roof can last thirty to forty years. Most of the cedar shake roofs we replace are just twenty to twenty five years old. The most important thing you can do to your roof to prolong it life is to keep it dry. Remove any fallen twigs, leaves and branches. These objects can trap moisture and act like sponges, not allowing the water to flow down the gutters and cause rot and mildew.
General maintenance is also very important to prolong the life of your shake roof. Replace any split or missing shakes as water will get under the materials and cause rot in unsuspecting areas. A particular problematic area is the ridge. The ridge caps are actually two smaller shakes stapled together in to a “v” shape to cover the apex. These staples will tend to back out, especially on a high sloped roof. This is because the caps need to be nailed at a more severe angle, putting more stress on the staples. It is important to check these areas periodically. Other areas to check would be the same as any roof including the flashings, chimney and any protrusion.
